Brewing in Formosa: 1870/1995 125 Years of Brewing Tradition; Throughout the developed world, there is a new interest in small breweries making local and specialty beers.

From the Industrial Revolution to the heyday of television advertising, breweries have become fewer and bigger, beers blander and more alike. At the height of the trend, the brewery that is now Algonquin seemed set to vanish forever.

Now, it is part of the renaissance.

About the Author

With a masters degree from the University of Toronto in the history of brewing in Toronto, Ian Bowering is the author of The Art and Mystery of Brewing in Ontario, a history of Ontario's brewing industry from the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists to the present, and in Search of the Perfect Brew and its sequel The Saga Continues, Canadian brewpub and microbrewery guides. Ontario's beer historian, Ian has just completed designing a typical mid-19th-century Ontario brewery for one of our leading pioneer villages, and is about to produce a world beer study for the Brewers Association of Canada.

While Ian maintains that beer is as much a part of our heritage as maple syrup, and that "no one's taste is wrong," he conducts beer appreciation seminars, writes extensively about beer, teaches antique appreciation courses, and currently supervises two museums.

A professional historian and museum curator, Ian enjoys hiking, opera, deep-sea fishing, and hording practically anything; his real hobby is finding that "perfect brew" in the ideal setting in the company of good friends.

He is married to writer/artist Lor Pelton, has two children Anna and Mac, and Babooshka the cat.
