The mineral resource extraction business in Canada generates 363,000 direct and indirect jobs, has one of the highest compensation rates of any sector, and pumps $42 billion annually into the economy, accounting for one-fifth of all exports. The results of the labour of miners north of the 49th parallel provides the greatest volume of commercial rail shipments and three-quarters of all traffic through our ports.
But this vital wealth generator for Canadian financial prosperity is subject to cyclical fluctuations in demand for its more than sixty widely sought commodities, due to external political, social, and economic events.
Despite downturns in world demand, this huge industry continues to deliver wealth from economic mineral deposits, and its products touch and enrich the lives of all Canadians. In little more than a century of development, mining has become a powerhouse of development and continues to richly reward its investors.
Mining success is predicated on the long haul. Prospectors keep on mine finding; major entrepreneurs and even small investors maintain faith in the careful and sustainable exploitation of resources over the long term.
Among highlights in this book are a city that welcomes the industry, hot commodities, and recent and emerging mining achievements. Above all is the emphasis on sustainable development, support of the aspirations of First Nations peoples, and protection of the environment.
This is a story of enterprise, hard work, and perseverance. Follow the exploits of the peopl who ensure the success of this vast nationwide undertaking and ensure Canada's place as a world leader in mining--finding fortunes in the ground.
