The plates are scraped and the smokes are lit, so it’s time to pull up a chair in the old bunkhouse and swap some tales.

“I mind the time I was snowshoeing through some timber in an area north of Splashy Lake when I came across an albino bull moose. I would have run right into the potlucker, if I hadn’t spotted his red tail flashing in the sun.

—A bunkhouse yarn

The plates are scraped and the smokes are lit, so it’s time to pull up a chair in the old bunkhouse and swap some tales. Storyteller extraordinaire Brent Connelly is back with more yarns about life in the bush. This time, in addition to his beloved Algonquin Park, Brent takes us north to Algoma and east to the Laurentians, not to mention “inbacka” a few other places in between. Familiar characters, such as Jack McRae and Johnny Shaw, pop in for a word or two, while new faces, such as Tony Vorlicek, Art Chapman, Charlie Downing and Davis MacVicar, set themselves down and make themselves to home. For as Brent says, “You know that you are having a good day when you are greeted by somebody who tells you that they are finer than hair on a frog.”

This collection will have you getting out your magnifying glass, it’s so fine.

About the Author

Brent Connelly was raised in Brownsburg, Quebec, a small hillside town nestled on the edge of the Lower Ottawa Valley and the Laurentian Mountains. In 1961, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and went on to enjoy a fulfilling career in forestry which spanned four decades. During that time, he worked in the forests of Ontario's two premier provincial parks, Algonquin and Lake Superior.

Brent was employed by McRae Lumber Co. Ltd. of Whitney, Ontario, Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. in Sault Ste. Marie and Mattawa, Ontario, and the Algonquin Forestry Authority in Pembroke, Ontario. His retirement came in 2000 after twenty-five years with the AFA.

Brent and Heather, his wife of thirty-nine years, now live in Ottawa. They have seven children and eleven grandchildren.

Brent Connelly is also the author of Holy Old Whistlin' -- Yarns About Algonquin Park Loggers, which was published by General Store Publishing House in 2005.
